Non Camera Smartphone – Shark Black Sub-brand Xiaomi made its Western debut today with Black Shark gaming phones in Europe. This cellphone was officially priced at £ 439 / € 499 for a 6GB RAM / 64GB storage model, up to £ 479 / € 549 for 8GB / 128GB. For a limited time, however, UK prices will be £ 409 / £ 449 and European prices will be € 469 / € 519. Although the launch of Xiaomi seems to be on time in the UK last week, Black Shark said cellphones will only be available through the sub-brand website alone for now.

I have been using my cellphone for more than a week, but I am not ready to publish a full review. I experienced a number of problems with the controller that was included and had communicated with the Black Shark, but did not receive the final answer in time for the embargo today. I don’t want to convey the final verdict on this device without being fully sure about its function, so for now, I have gathered some overall thoughts.

Non Camera Smartphone

This phone feels like a bargain, but it doesn’t feel like a bargain: the quality of manufacture is sturdy, combining plastic and metal to a surprisingly cool effect. Yes, this is really a game, but I don’t find it too flashy, and to be honest I’m digging out black and green color schemes – especially shiny green chamfers. The bezel is not parallel to the 2018 trend, but it is not large, and the 1080p screen that is good enough does have a higher aspect ratio. Also, hey, at least there is room for the fingerprint sensor on the front. (There is no headphone jack, sorry. But the USB-C dongle is included.)

The Chinese version of the Black Shark ship with the MIUI version is called JoyUI, but even though the Western version carries that name too, the actual software is completely different. This is basically an ultra-stock Android with several adjustments that focus on the game.

The Black Shark uses the same Snapdragon 845 chip, but is very fast, very fast – the most slippery and most responsive Android device that I use all year. I do not know whether it depends on the stripped software or the liquid cooling system that is very proud, but the general speed of the Black Shark is immediately visible. Battery life is also very good so far, as you would expect from a 4,000 mAh cell in it. The 20-plus-12-megapixel dual-camera system seems to have been lifted from the A2 and 6X Mi, which means it’s not the top seed level but is generally pretty good – and much better than you expect from a telephone at its price level.

The most unique thing about the Black Shark phone itself is the button on the left side with the only function to take you to the “Shark Room,” landscape mode that organizes your game library into a console-style menu and lets you slide the fingerprint sensor to lower game related dashboard options. I don’t know that this really needs a special button, but it does make a number of ways to make Black Shark feel more like a device made specifically than a telephone that happens to play games.

The included game controller has an analog stick and two shoulder buttons, and clips to the left side of the phone when held in a landscape; You also need to use a plastic bumper that is included for the entire phone so that it can be installed, which is rather unfortunate. Games that work with Shark Space allow you to assign a screen area to each of the controls, but most compatible games that I encounter are not really the type of thing you want the controller to be in the first place, unless there is someone out there who wants to try catch Pokémon with an analog stick.

Some games that seem incompatible work and only treat it like a normal Bluetooth controller, but that isn’t always ideal – Asphalt 9, for example, lets me drive with a stick fine, but seems to expect the full Xbox layout to be available and give me there is no way to brake.

I can’t get Fortnite or PUBG to work with controllers because of the lack of Shark Space support, which might be a problem solver for many people. I don’t understand why it should not be possible to reduce the overlay customization controls in the non-Shark Space game – I have been led to believe it will – and Black Shark says it is looking into it as well as the Asphalt issue.

I did get a controller to work with PFLG Knub Out from NetEase, and it worked really well – it’s much more convenient to move your character with a stick and aim down by pressing the trigger, and it’s also good not to keep your thumb covering half the screen. I would not say it gives you major competitive advantages like mouse and keyboard versus gamepad – this is closer to the difference between using a Pro Controller rather than Joy-Cons with Fortnite on Switch.

Basically, I need more time to test the controller with a wider selection of games, and for Black Shark to come back to me about the problems I have found, so keep abreast of the developments.

But whether you care or don’t care how well the controller works, or Android games in general, I think this phone is good – especially at the launch price. Considering the price, there is no red flag unless you are completely turned off by the design. The best thing about it is boring. But this is explicitly sold as a mobile game, so I can’t fully recommend it if I’m not sure of that level.

So that’s how it is. I feel like this will be a mobile that is quite attractive to anyone in Europe who wants an Android device to basically stock with excellent performance at a low price. It’s possible, don’t buy it, expecting it to help you penetrate your Fortnite level faster.

If I have something to say in the full review, let me know below.
