Most Durable Smartphones – If you have a smartphone or tablet, chances are that Corning Gorilla Glass protects the screen. If the flagship device has a glass-sandwich design, you might get Gorilla Glass on the back too. The newer your cellphone, the better the glass, but it still can’t be destroyed. In fact, my biggest concern for my iPhone X is that I will drop it and break the windshield or rear, which is why I turned into an ugly device as soon as I bought it.
The end of 2018 devices, however, will have better glass, because Corning has just announced a new generation of Gorilla Glass 6. And the new iPhone will probably get it too. Why am I so sure the next iPhone will get Gorilla Glass 6? Because Apple isn’t the only company that puts Corning on the map, when partnering with glass companies for the original iPhone, but Apple also invested a significant amount of money at Corning last May. From the Apple press release:

Apple today announced that Corning Incorporated will receive $ 200 million from the new Advanced Manufacturing Fund from Apple as part of the company’s commitment to encourage innovation among American producers. This investment will support Corning R & D, capital equipment requirements, and sophisticated glass processing. The 65-year-old Harrodsburg facility at Corning has become an integral part of the 10-year collaboration between these two innovative companies and will be the focus of Apple’s investment.
You don’t invest a lot of money without any hope. And while investment might be too late to bring immediate benefits – like Gorilla Glass 6 on the iPhone X – not too far-fetched to assume the next generation iPhone will have Gorilla Glass 6 on the front and rear?
Corning said that Gorilla Glass 6 will protect various devices later this year, without revealing any product names. The Galaxy Note 9 and Pixel 3 are also one of the first gadgets to use stronger glass.
How good is Gorilla Glass 6?
“Gorilla Glass 6 is a completely new glass composition that can be chemically reinforced to provide significantly higher compression levels than is possible with Gorilla Glass 5. This allows Gorilla Glass 6 to be more resistant to damage,” Dr. Jaymin Amin, vice president of technology and product development, said in a press release the other day. “In addition, by resting as long as drops are probabilistic events, additional compression helps increase, on average, the probability of survival through several downturn events.”
Does that mean it won’t break? Corning is convinced that it will be far better in decline than the previous generation, and that is better.
The company revealed more details about how Gorilla Glass 6 was made for CNBC. Corning began with thousands of new compositions fed to computers for simulation. Several dozen prototypes made it out, and then Corning began producing it. Of them, two to four candidates were chosen. Then the tests began when Corning tried to understand what caused the glass to break and how it could be repaired – see the full video below:
