Japanese Smartphone Brands – Top Chinese smartphone makers Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo and Honor sold handsets worth more than 50,000 Rs in India during FY18, according to a report in The Economic Times. This is more than double the income they generate by selling smartphones in FY17. Analysts say that with the dominance of these companies growing in India, this trend is here to stay.
The four brands, along with other Chinese brands such as Lenovo-Motorola, OnePlus and Infinix, accounted for more than half of smartphone sales in India. South Korean, Japanese and Indian telephone companies have established themselves as global brands, but these Chinese companies offer high-specification models at lower prices.

This makes them more attractive to Indian consumers on average, two analysts said in the newspaper.
Tarun Pathak from Counterpoint Research was quoted as saying that the brand has easy access to Shenzhen’s hardware and R & D hubs, and supply chain ecosystems.
“This has helped them become innovators and always be on top of trends,” he told the newspaper.
The success of these Chinese brands in India is also beneficial to the country, because this gives more investment in local manufacturing and more jobs.
Xiaomi recently announced that it will invest Rs 15,000 crore in the smartphone component manufacturing unit in April. Oppo is in the process of setting up two facilities in Uttar Pradesh.
These companies conquered all key price segments in the smartphone space – Xiaomi in the Rs 6,000-13,000 band, Oppo and Vivo in Rs 10,000-22,000 bands, the head of the large smartphone retail chain was quoted as saying.
“These price segments cover more than 80 percent of the overall market where no Indian brand has succeeded in cutting ice and Samsung is the only non-Chinese brand to fight it,” he said.
Xiaomi India’s revenue from operations is Rs 22,947 crore in FY18, up from Rs 8,334 crore in FY17.
Likewise, Oppo’s revenue increased to Rs 11,994 crore in FY18 from Rs 8,050 crore in FY17, and Vivo India’s income came in at Rs 11,179 crore, up from Rs 6,292 crore in the previous fiscal year.
On FY18, the Indian smartphone market is worth around Rs 1.5 lakh crore.
