Drawing Tablet Online – If you are an artist, designer, or illustrator who is looking for a new tablet or tablet PC, you have to weigh a lot. The model price, size, screen resolution, and stylus pressure sensitivity can make a big difference, so look at the best list of tablets for advertising materials, including ‘cellular’ tablets, tablet PCs, and 2-in-1 models.

Before starting, we must define what is meant by tablets in this article. We do not mean traditional graphic tablets with flat image surfaces connected to your Mac or PC like Wacom Intuos Pro Paper Edition (which you can buy from Amazon here), often called ‘Wacom tablets’ even if made by other manufacturers. We also don’t include graphics tablets with built-in displays such as the Wacom’s Cintiq Pro series. You can read our collection of ‘tablet displays’ in our guide for the best cheap Cintiq alternatives.

What we’re concentrating on here is basically a computer with a screen that you can sketch, draw, and paint. Some of them are the so-called wider tablets in the world, Apple iPad Pro (below) and Android tablets that run cellular operating systems. T
It’s thin, lightweight with a screen 9 to 12 inches and has a very long battery life.

Tablet PCs like Microsoft Surface Pro (below), HP ZBook x2, Wacom’s MobileStudio Pro are bigger with screens from 13 to 14 inches and offer a full version of Windows – so you can run the same applications as you do on a desktop or laptop, like Adobe Creative Cloud. Most of these models offer keyboard clip-on, so manufacturers sometimes call it ‘detachable’ because it can function as a laptop.

Tablet PCs are usually thinner and lighter than the type of laptop that you consider to be a designer / artist, and thus have less powerful components. If you want the performance of people like Apple MacBook Pro or Dell XPS 15 – and 15-inch screens – you should look for ‘convertibles’ like HP’s ZBook x360 (below) or Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 (note, term 2 -in-1 is often used for removable and convertible models). They are called convertibles because they are laptops that can also be folded in the opposite way to close them, turning the bottom behind the screen to make a thick tablet shape ready for you to draw.

They are also different from tablet PCs because their processors, RAM, and storage are on the base rather than behind the scenes – so thick as traditional laptops.

(One oddity here is the Microsoft Surface Book, which is a tablet PC with a clip-on keyboard that has a built-in graphics chip, improves performance when connected one way like a laptop or vice versa and is folded.)

Here we list all the best in each class. Most devices have been reviewed by digital illustrator Sam Gilbey.

Apple iPad Pro 10.5 inches

Screen size: 10.5- or 12.7 inches
OS: iOS 11
Stylus: Apple Pencil (sold separately)
Apple released a new iPad Pro tablet in 2017, both in screen sizes of 10.5 and 12.9 inches. For Apple credit, artists can get a lot from the iPad Pro – you can make all finished artwork on the device using a tool like Procreate 4, but for designers it might not be the best choice because it still doesn’t fully support Adobe creative Cloud Applications like Photoshop and XD .

For illustrator Sam Gilbey, the best feature of the iPad Pro is the Apple Pencil stylus, which you have to buy separately for £ 89 / $ 99. Sam thinks Pencils are more comfortable and more balanced for drawing, even than Wacom’s Pro Pen 2.

The iPad Pro is an amazing creative tool. For artists and illustrators who want portable drawing and painting devices, this is more than just a match for Microsoft Surface Pro or Wacom MobileStudio Pro (unless you prefer the extra three-inch screen you get from the 16-inch Wacom).

For designers, editors, and the rest, Windows-based tablets still offer the ability to complete projects in ways that the iPad Pro does not have. However, if you have a budget, the 10.5-inch model is an excellent roughing / ideation tool that you want to pair with an iMac or desktop PC (and the Duet Display Pro application lets you use an iPad Pro like Cintiq).

Apple iPad 9.7in (2018)

Screen size: 9.7 inches
OS: iOS 11
Stylus: Apple Pencil (sold separately)
Apple also released a new 9.7-inch base level iPad (the only non-iPad Pro option). This is designed to attract students and teachers, but with the support of Apple Pencil (pencils are still sold separately) and affordable prices, this can also be an option for artists who will use the iPad especially for quick sketches.

Logitech has also just released a new iPad stylus, Crayon. With its chunkier design, Crayon is built for the education market, and is likely to be younger.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S3

Screen size: 9.7 inches
OS: Android 7.0 (Nougat)
Stylus: Samsung S Pen (included)
This is Samsung’s best rival for the Apple iPad Pro. This is considered the best Android tablet to be launched in a few years, so if you are an Android fan, this is your best bet. The screen has HD 2,048 x 1,536 resolution and HDR support for better color and contrast.

However, there is no display of True Tone iPad Pro (all you can do is optionally activate a blue light filter) and it can be a little reflective with certain lighting. But that includes the Samsung S Pen, which has four times the amount of pressure sensitivity to the Apple Pencil.

And while Autodesk Sketchbook Pro is available on Android, Procreate is unfortunately not. However, here is a list of the best Android applications for artists.

Microsoft Surface Pro (2017)

Screen size: 12.3 inches
OS: Windows 10
Stylus: Microsoft Surface Pen (sold separately)
Microsoft Surface Pro is a tablet PC running Windows 10 Pro on a 12.3-inch screen. This can be used as a drawing tool easily, even if you are not experienced in Windows software. The design is sturdy, if a little smaller than a tablet, but remember this is a fully-fledged PC too. The screen has a resolution of 2.736 x 1.824 and 10 multi-touch points. It takes an Intel HD graphics card and Core M3 m3 7 processor (for the most basic models).

The pen (not included with Surface Pro) supports tilt and offers 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity. Because this model comes with a keyboard, it’s usually easiest to work from a desk, so if you are looking for something more portable, this might not be the best choice for you. We think the Microsoft Surface Pro is a better option for designers who want to use Adobe Creative Cloud, but it may not be the easiest device to use freely.

Wacom MobileStudio Pro

Screen size: 13.3 or 15.6 inches
OS: Windows 10
Stylus: Wacom Pro Pen 2 (included)
The choice of Wacom PC tablets comes with Wacom Pro Pen 2, and runs Adobe applications such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. It is available in two sizes – 13.3 inches and 15.6 inches – and has a screen resolution that competes with laptops such as Dell Precision 5510 or HP’s ZBook Studio. It displays 96 percent of the Adobe RGB color space, and a multi-touch screen.

Like other Wacom pens – and unlike the pens used by Microsoft Surface and Apple Pencil – the pen does not need to be charged. This offers 8,192 levels of pressure sensitivity. MobileStudio Pro can detect up to 60 different tilt levels at angles from vertical to 40 degrees – which changes the effect of your punch depending on what is possible in the application you are using. This will be a good choice for designers and artists who want a portable tablet PC to work on.

reMarkable Paper Tablet

Screen size: 10.3 inches
OS: ownership
Stylus: ownership
The reMarkable paper tablet is an independent offering that aims to replicate the experience of pens and pencils on paper. It offers a resolution similar to XPS 15, but only offers a grayscale display. Simplicity is a keyword with this model.

This Stylus is battery free, and offers 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity. It also supports slope, and has a special high friction tip. The tablet itself has good battery life, maybe because it only has the ability to draw; see reMarkable more as an early electronic reader that you can use instead of replacing the iPad. Storage-wise you get 8GB of space, and an additional 8GB in the cloud. Exporting is very easy, but we are disappointed at this time to only produce PDF and PNG. PDF export also caused some problems for us.
