Best Radar App For Android – When you find yourself in a new city, whether it’s on vacation with family or friends or on a work trip, the last thing you want is to buy dinner from ‘that place the locals avoid because they all know people who call themselves a chef heat up return the shrimp in the microwave ‘.

The good news is that there are a number of free smartphone apps that will help you find the best restaurants in any city, big or small. Whether you want to eat three times as much, or just want to find the best on-the-go falafel wrap, there is an application for that job.

Best Radar App For Android

Our guide includes applications that you may have heard of, and some that you may not have, offering user reviews, pro reviews and application-based table bookings, and even special applications to help you track where vegans can eat without worrying if there is meat in the broth noodles

Dojo

There are food applications that are curated, and which depend on user reviews. Dojo is an application that is fully curated, and does not offer any random family restaurants, or bargain for restaurants.

A dojo is about what’s hot, and what’s cool: a place where people who wear trends that haven’t even appeared in Vogue can be found.

Don’t skip this one if you have an aversion to hipsters. The Dojo offers some really interesting and valuable food suggestions that will never surface in applications like TripAdvisor.

This posts reviews about restaurants too, by writing-up only a few old paragraphs to keep things sharp.

Time has run out

An institution when it comes to advice about great nights, Time Out has been around for 50 years now. This includes major cities throughout the world, and publishes review scores by critics and their own customers. It’s people like us.

Time Out lets you find new and interesting places without feeling that you are in danger of being a slave to the latest trends. You can also order tables from within the application.

This is not only for restaurants and cafes, though – Time Out is also one of the best sources if you are looking for something to do before or after a meal.

HappyCow

HappyCow is dedicated to vegans out there who are still struggling to find a place that truly serves good vegan food, not just pasta with tomato paste with non-vegetarian parmesan on it.

HappyCow has a pretty dilapidated design, and a basic layout that won’t win any awards. However, the content is invaluable.

You can look for vegan and vegetarian restaurants, as well as those who have a choice of vegetables, even if you want the latter, you might also use one of the larger applications.

The best part is how HappyCow has been accepted by the veggie and vegan community, so you’ll find lots of user reviews for most locations – just because the ‘vegan’ restaurant doesn’t mean it’s good.

Zomato

Formerly known as Urbanspoon, Zomato is the ‘other’ great restaurant search application, next to TripAdvisor and Yelp. This is the most unpopular among the three, despite having enough followers in India, where the main team on Zomato is based.

Should you use Yelp, Zomato or TripAdvisor? Everything has a very large database, and even though Zomato has the smallest user base, it is still enough to fill most of the list of restaurants with reviews.

Menu is where Zomato strives for extra. Yelp often offers links to restaurant menu web pages, but Zomato is full of actual menu photos. This is useful for smaller places that may not have a website, or that have not been updated in the past two years.

Google Assistant

Many don’t consider this an application at all, but Google Assistant is one of the best ways to find the closest place to eat – if you have an Android phone.

Simply typing (or speaking) “pizza”, “Thai” or “curry” into the Assistant interface is enough to give you some of the closest suggestions from the great Google database in the sky.

Listings appear based on the same criteria as TripAdvisor. A closer location and better user reviews means you are more likely to see a restaurant appear.

Google Assistant wins prizes for quick fixes. Right at the top, you will only see a few suggestions and not an endless list of Yelp and TripAdvisor. You will see similar results from searches in Chrome or Google Maps, thoughts – as before with Google, everything is connected.

TripAdvisor

You probably already know about TripAdvisor. It collects millions of reviews of restaurants, cafes, pubs, hotels and attractions from all over the world.

Even though you don’t trust a user-based review system, there are lots of fun things here to read about the horrible experiences some customers have.

If you need to find the closest restaurant in another country while on vacation, don’t forget that you can download listings for many big cities, which saves you the risk of having to risk high roaming costs.

To download a city, type its name into the application’s search bar and scroll down to the page. You have to flip through lots of thumbnails, but you have to see the download link with an indication of how much space the city will use – London, for example, only 111MB without photos, which is a data offer.

Barking

The main alternative to TripAdvisor, Yelp focuses on locals looking for places to go rather than travelers. The core concept is the same, though, with Yelp supported by user reviews.

This determines the ranking of restaurants, and written reviews allow you to see if there are recent rodent sightings, or report “the worst service ever” – although many places seem to have that, according to app users.

The blog-style section makes Yelp feel a little different from TripAdvisor. There are no Time Out-style articles based on staff choices, but faster weekly ranking based on the latest reviews from ‘Elite’ Yelp-ers.

Just eat

This UK application is known for its shipping service – it’s perfect to find local takeaways that don’t have the money or time to create a website that is inviting and professionally made.

You can order for collections from Just Eat too – just select Collection, not Delivery when payment. You can even pay with cash, which means you don’t pay money through Just Eat at all. This is an established company, so don’t be shy about paying with a card.

Just Eat is a great application for cheaper and classic foods, especially curry, pizza, and Thai and Chinese food.

OpenTable

This is the main application for ordering tables in restaurants, because so many restaurants actually use the OpenTable system to manage their reservations.

On TripAdvisor you might be looking for the nearest pizza restaurant, but with OpenTable you can find a place with a table for four people available at 7pm. Thanks to the tight integration with the company itself, you can often see the entire menu when you browse too.

This is not the best application to find out the ins and outs of restaurants. There is a review section, but you can’t see candid comments about food, as seen on TripAdvisor.

However, if you want to arrange a night without having to worry about finding your chosen restaurant fully booked, download OpenTable immediately.
